OSF St. Francis Hospital Laboratory is part of the OSF System Laboratory. All laboratories within the hospitals owned and operated by The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis were combined into one organizational division April 1, 1997. Today, the OSF System Laboratory offers a full array of testing services, meeting the needs of 15 hospitals, several nursing homes and thousands of physicians.

OSF St. Francis Hospital Laboratory is accredited by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is certified by the Health Care Financing Administration under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.

In performing tests on blood, fluids and tissues, the highly educated medical laboratory professionals at OSF St. Francis find causes and cures to help the citizens of Delta County and surrounding areas lead happier, healthier lives. With a board-certified pathologist and 32 laboratory employees, OSF St. Francis Hospital Laboratory provides outpatient and inpatient results for more than 390,000 laboratory tests a year, equivalent to 10 tests for every man, woman and child in Delta County. Approximately 70 percent of the tests are performed for outpatients and 30 percent for inpatients.

Within the past year, nearly 1,700 blood components were transfused. More than 3,500 tissue specimens that were surgically removed in the hospital and in physician offices were processed for diagnosis by the pathologist. To give you an idea of how busy the OSF St. Francis laboratory is, lab personnel use 60,000 pairs of rubber/vinyl gloves each and every year! Couriers travel approximately 46,000 miles per year to physician offices and nursing homes to collect specimens for testing at the hospital Laboratory.

OSF St. Francis Hospital is affiliated with the Clinical Laboratory Science program at Northern Michigan University. Since 1968, 23 Medical Technologists and 45 Medical Laboratory Technicians have been educated at OSF St. Francis Hospital Laboratory.
