Breast Cancer Lymphedema
Breast Cancer Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a swelling of the arm or hand caused by a buildup of lymph fluid after an auxiliary lymph node dissection, radiation or repeated infections in the arm. Lymphedema cannot be prevented, but it can be treated.
Treatment Options
A program for treatment of Lymphedema related to breast cancer was initiated in 1998 as part of the Rehabilitation Services Department at OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group. Therapy is offered by a Physical Therapist and Certified Lymphedema Provider, with certified classroom education with hands-on training. A physician's diagnosis and order for services is required for all lymphedema treatments. Talk to your doctor about the options available to you through OSF Rehabilitation Services. The OSF program for treatment of Lymphedema includes:
- Aerobic Exercises
- Bandaging the Arm
- Education
- Flexibility Exercises
- Light Resistance Exercises
- Manual Lymph Drainage (specialized massage to increase lymph flow)
