| Breast Cancer Lymphedema
Lymphedema
is a swelling of the arm or hand caused by a buildup of lymph fluid
after an auxiliary lymph node dissection, radiation or repeated
infections in the arm. Lymphedema cannot be prevented, but it can be
treated.
Treatment Options
A new program for treatment of Lymphedema related to breast cancer was
initiated in 1998 as part of the Rehabilitation Services Department at
OSF St. Francis Hospital. This program includes:
- Aerobic Exercises
- Bandaging the Arm
- Education
- Flexibility Exercises
- Light Resistance Exercises
- Manual Lymph Drainage (specialized
massage to increase lymph flow)
