| Sports Medicine & Athletic Training
The
Rehabilitation Services Department at OSF St. Francis Hospital has two
certified athletic trainers on staff. Athletic trainers are educated in
the care, prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Services
are provided for musculoskeletal/orthopedic injuries ranging from
sprains, strains and contusions to arthroscopic and reconstructive
surgery. The focus of these services is to return the athlete to
competitive activities as quickly and as safely possible.
A referral from a physician is needed to
begin outpatient rehabilitation. After an initial evaluation by a
physical therapist, further visits are set up with an athletic trainer.
Services offered include:
- Cybex rehabilitation and testing
- KT 1000
- Functional/sport specific activities
- Education
- Brace measurement
- Splinting
- Aerobic conditioning
- Therapeutic modality--ultrasound,
electrical stimulation
Services are also provided to area high
schools. These include injury evaluation and recommendations, game
coverage and education of coaches. Contact with the high school athletes
and coaches allow for a safer playing environment and a higher level of
medical care.
